Community members expressing their views during a school board discussion.
The Beverly Hills School Board is facing growing discontent among parents and community members, leading to recall efforts against board members Russell Stuart and Sigalie Sabag. A coalition led by local parent Jackie Kruger has initiated petitions citing lack of transparency and serious allegations of misconduct. Community concerns have escalated following administrative cuts that affect key educational positions, prompting a vigorous response from community stakeholders. The board’s decisions and the ongoing recall process signal potential changes in the district’s leadership dynamics.
Beverly Hills is buzzing these days with conversations surrounding the local School Board—and not all of them are positive. A growing sense of discontent has emerged from a significant portion of parents and community members, which has led to a movement targeting the recall of two school board members, Russell Stuart and Sigalie Sabag. This spirited effort kicked off on March 11 when a group led by local parent and attorney Jackie Kruger delivered notifications of intent to circulate recall petitions.
Kruger is stepping up to represent what she describes as “a lot of upset parents and members of the community.” Her group is particularly concerned about the board’s lack of transparency when it comes to important decisions, including the abrupt resignation of former Superintendent Dr. Michael Bregy and recent administrative reshuffling at El Rodeo and Horace Mann Elementary Schools. These issues have ignited discussions and frustrations that continue to heat up in the community.
The main focus of the recall is not just dissatisfaction; community members have laid out several serious allegations against the board members. They assert that Stuart and Sabag have displayed what they call “clear violations” of the district’s code of conduct and bylaws. Among the charges: undermining educational excellence and failing to uphold core values of governance and responsibility.
In a show of commitment, almost 100 signatures were amassed within just 12 hours of launching the recall effort, demonstrating the deep-rooted dissatisfaction among community members. For the recall to go through, the group must now prepare a petition that gathers around 4,560 signatures, which will allow them to move forward with a potential election within 100 to 140 days.
Should the board members be recalled, both their seats would remain vacant until the next regularly scheduled elections, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over the school district’s leadership. Stuart and Sabag were both elected to the board in November 2024, and they are now facing fierce backlash for decisions made since assuming their positions.
Stuart has expressed disappointment regarding the recall initiative, claiming that the administrative changes stemmed from necessary budgetary concerns. He has attempted to defend his decisions while also navigating controversy, particularly for a social media post that seemingly linked the Beverly Hills Unified School District to DOGE, an informal cryptocurrency, which he defended as representative of fiscal responsibility.
On the other hand, Sabag has responded to the recall efforts by labeling the notices as “vague” and bordering on slander. She believes that such initiatives are an attempt to protect the current status quo rather than genuinely advancing governance.
The matter became more complex when the board unanimously voted to eliminate ten administrative positions on the same day the recall notifications were served. This restructuring involved cutting roles such as the executive director of communications and two elementary assistant principal positions. The board claims these reductions will help direct funding to student programs and ensure fiscal responsibility, especially after an audit indicated that the district was overstaffed.
This decision, however, has angered many community members, who have voiced strong opposition, particularly regarding the removal of critical positions like the assistant principal roles. The principal’s contract at one school was also not renewed during this heated meeting, adding fuel to an already bubbling fire of discontent.
As parents and community members continue to question and protest these administrative cuts, many are reminding the school board about the importance of transparency and accountability. The ongoing situation is unfolding amid a backdrop of broader concerns about the direction of the Beverly Hills Unified School District under the current leadership.
With the recall effort gaining traction, it will be interesting to see how the dynamics between board members and community stakeholders evolve in the coming weeks. As they say, the eyes of the community are watching closely!
