Community engagement in fire safety discussions is crucial for Beverly Hills residents.
Beverly Hills Mayor Sharona Nazarian hosted the inaugural ‘Straight Talk with Sharona’ session, addressing urgent fire safety initiatives following recent destructive fires. Community preparedness was emphasized, particularly in the wake of updated fire hazard maps affecting local neighborhoods. Fire Chief Gregory Barton highlighted the importance of resident participation in fire mitigation efforts and the city’s ISO Class 1 rating. The session also covered community programs aimed at improving safety awareness. Residents were encouraged to adhere to fire code standards to maintain safety in the face of increasing fire hazards.
Beverly Hills – Mayor Sharona Nazarian hosted the inaugural session of “Straight Talk with Sharona,” focusing on urgent fire safety initiatives and community preparedness. The session was particularly timely following destructive fires in the Palisades earlier this year, which served as a stark reminder of the ongoing fire risks faced by the community.
The State Fire Marshal’s updated maps have expanded the designation of “very high” fire hazard severity zones, affecting neighborhoods from Sunset Boulevard to Lomitas Drive. This change prompted the mayor to travel to San Francisco to address the maps publicly, as local officials had not been afforded the opportunity to provide input during their creation.
During the session, Fire Chief Gregory Barton addressed community engagement in fire mitigation efforts. He pointed out that residents have not been adequately recognized for their roles in reducing brush fire threats. Despite ongoing efforts to maintain safety measures, Beverly Hills has been noted as a “Firewise Community,” having achieved this status in 2005, ranking third in California. This designation is due to proactive measures, including community evacuation drills and the installation of outdoor warning sirens.
This year, conducting brush inspections will occur later than usual, shifting from the typical schedule of April or May to early June. This delay has been necessitated by the new fire hazard maps, emphasizing the importance of compliance with fire safety regulations. Chief Barton indicated that residents complying with safety code requirements would not face citations unless they neglect established standards.
Beverly Hills boasts an Insurance Service Organization (ISO) Class 1 rating, the pinnacle of fire department performance standards. This exemplary rating provides residents with assurance regarding the effectiveness of local fire services. The session also touched on a variety of other important topics, including a new wellness network, BH Fire Watch technology aimed at increasing fire safety awareness, mental health resources, and strategic long-term planning for fire department equipment.
Following the presentation, Mayor Nazarian opened the floor to a Q&A session where attendees posed queries related to a variety of fire safety issues. Residents expressed concerns about fire activity in Franklin Canyon and the availability of resources for non-emergency circumstances. For such situations, Captain Max Subin reminded the audience of the non-emergency contact number, which is 310-550-4951.
Representatives from the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce also engaged in the discussion, inquiring about how awareness around fire safety could be increased among local businesses. In response, the mayor elaborated on the community preparedness program known as “Just in Case BH,” designed to enhance emergency response capabilities throughout the city.
Additional questions raised by the audience included topics ranging from a memorial site to attracting new local restaurants, earthquake alert systems, and safety measures pertaining to Metro projects. In response to community safety concerns, it was announced that a safety kiosk would be installed at the La Cienega Metro station. This initiative is expected to serve as a pioneering model for future safety installations within the city’s transit system.
In conclusion, the primary measures highlighted for ensuring community fire safety include consistent annual brush clearance and strict adherence to fire code standards. These steps are critical for maintaining the safety and well-being of Beverly Hills residents in the face of growing fire hazards.
