Rendering of the new Cartier store in Beverly Hills

News Summary

Beverly Hills has greenlit a new Cartier store at the corner of Rodeo Drive and Brighton Way. This three-story, 15,250 square foot space will include luxury retail, offices, and an exclusive terrace. Following delays due to geological concerns and the pandemic, construction is set to start in August 2024, with a completion date expected by 2027. The city is also addressing housing needs alongside luxury developments, aiming for 3,100 new housing units by 2029.

Beverly Hills Welcomes Cartier with Exciting New Development Plans

The prestigious city of Beverly Hills has just given the green light to an exciting new development that’s sure to turn heads. Recently, the Beverly Hills Planning Commission conditionally approved a grand plan for a stunning new Cartier store, set to rise majestically at the iconic corner of Rodeo Drive and Brighton Way. This development, which boasts impressive architectural design and luxury enticements, has been in the works for quite some time, and the community is buzzing with anticipation.

What Will the New Cartier Store Include?

So, what can you expect from this fabulous new building? The three-story structure will encompass a whopping 15,250 square feet dedicated to a mix of retail space, offices, and luxurious lounge areas. Even more exciting, there’s a special enclosed terrace planned for the third floor, where VIP customers will be able to enjoy an exclusive shopping experience in style. Think of it as a luxurious retreat where high-end clients can relax while enjoying breathtaking views. The excitement from the Cartier team is palpable, with hints that they view this location as a true “Cartier temple,” emphasizing how important it is for their brand.

Delays and Challenges

While the enthusiasm is high, it’s worth mentioning the bumps along the road leading up to this approval. The project has faced its share of delays since it was initially approved by the City Council back in 2018. New state laws concerning geological remapping related to the Santa Monica fault zone required additional geotechnical tests. As if that wasn’t enough, the COVID-19 pandemic also caused a significant slowdown in testing and development. These hurdles necessitated extensive scientific analysis to ensure safety standards while still capturing Cartier’s vision for the store’s design.

Community Involvement and Future Plans

Interestingly, during the recent planning meeting, there were no public comments either for or against the Cartier project. Some commissioners did express concern regarding a lack of parking provisions for the luxury store, especially given recent laws that limit parking requirements near public transportation stops. But Cartier executives are optimistic, stating their expectation that most customers will arrive via private chauffeurs, while employees are likely to make use of public transportation.

A Vision for the Future

The developer plans to kick off excavation by August, aiming for a completion date in either the summer or early fall of 2027. The old structure that resided on the site was demolished in 2024, clearing the way for this much-anticipated new development. The design remains largely consistent with the initial plans approved in 2018, showcasing Cartier’s commitment to their vision despite all regulatory changes and geological findings.

Beverly Hills Looking Ahead

In addition to the buzz surrounding the Cartier store, the city is making strides in its broader housing plans. The Planning Commission also recently reviewed updates on the city’s Housing Element and General Plan Annual Report, certified by the state in May 2024. This ambitious plan aims to facilitate the construction of 3,100 new housing units by 2029, including provisions for 557 low-income housing units. While there have been hiccups with previous versions of the Housing Element being rejected, the city issued permits for 82 new residential units just between 2021 and 2023, helping to ease the housing crunch.

As Beverly Hills continues to evolve, it’s clear that both luxury and community needs are being woven into the fabric of its future. Exciting times are ahead for this glamorous city, and residents and visitors alike can look forward to what’s to come as the Cartier store development progresses.
