News Summary
Beverly Hills will face significant subway disruptions as the Los Angeles County Transportation Authority closes two major D Line stations for construction. The Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/Normandie stations will be closed for over two months to support the D Line extension project, which includes seven new stations. Alternative transportation options will be available for commuters, including increased bus services. The project, part of the region’s long-term transportation plans, aims to enhance transit connections ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
Beverly Hills is set to experience significant subway-related disruptions as the Los Angeles County Transportation Authority announces the closure of two major stations on the D Line. From Saturday, May 17, at 9 p.m. until Friday, July 25, at 11 p.m., the Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/Normandie stations will be closed to facilitate critical construction required for the integration of the existing D Line with the new subway extension project.
The D Line subway extension will include seven new stations and will extend from Wilshire/Western to Westwood. In light of the station closures, buses will operate between the Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/Vermont stations to serve affected D Line passengers. Alternative transportation options will be available through Bus Shuttle 855 and Metro Lines 720 and 20, ensuring that commuters have access to transit during this construction period. Furthermore, the B Line, connecting Union Station to the Wilshire/Vermont station, will increase its service frequency from every 12 minutes to every 8 minutes to accommodate higher ridership demands during the closure.
The D Line extension project is being implemented in three sections. The first section, featuring the Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega stations, is scheduled to open in fall 2025. The second section will include the Wilshire/Rodeo and Century City/Constellation stations, expected to be completed in 2026, and the final section will feature the Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital stations, with a projected completion date in 2027.
As construction progresses, other disruptions will be noticeable along Wilshire Boulevard. Various intersections, including Wilshire/Fairfax, Wilshire/La Brea, and Wilshire/Western, will undergo scheduled closures for repaving on different weekends in June. Specifically, closures will occur on the following dates:
- Wilshire/Fairfax: June 13-16 (from San Diego Way to Spaulding Avenue)
- Wilshire/Western: June 20-23 (between Western Avenue and Saint Andrews Place)
- Wilshire/La Brea: June 27-30 (between Mansfield and Cloverdale avenues)
In addition, ongoing street restorations will continue on Wilshire/La Cienega, where two lanes are currently open in each direction between La Cienega and San Vicente boulevards. However, northbound La Cienega Boulevard will see traffic restricted to a single lane from May 19 to May 27 to facilitate concrete pouring for a new bus pad.
Crews are also actively engaging in station construction at Wilshire/Rodeo, with K-rail enclosures established along Wilshire Boulevard. Traffic controls will be put in place to manage reduced lanes and support ongoing construction. Further preparations at Century City/Constellation station include the removal of deck panels and street surface repairs, which are expected to last for approximately two months commencing in July.
Motorists traveling through affected areas are advised to follow recommended detours and allocate additional time for their journeys. It is important to note that Wilshire Boulevard between Crescent Drive and El Camino will remain closed until April 7 due to ongoing work on the Wilshire/Rodeo Metro Station. This closure is necessary for the removal of concrete deck panels and subsequent street restoration.
The D Line Subway Extension Project is an integral component of the Los Angeles area’s long-term transportation planning and infrastructure development, aimed at improving transit connections and preparing for substantial events such as the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. A dedicated 24-hour project hotline has been established for the public to address any inquiries regarding the ongoing D Line Extension project.
