The tentative agreement, reached prior to the conclusion of the current school year, represents a significant collaborative achievement for both parties involved.

The newly established agreement includes a salary increase of 4.75% for all staff members, effective July 1, 2025. This change will raise the certificated hourly rate to $66.46 per hour. Furthermore, the benefits cap is set to increase by $1,500, bringing the total benefits package to $14,750. These key financial adjustments are aimed at enhancing the overall compensation for educators within the district.

In addition to salary and benefits modifications, the new agreement introduces paid evacuation leave policies for staff affected by natural or manmade disasters, reflecting a proactive approach to staff welfare during emergencies. Adjustments to class size ratios for transitional kindergarten through fifth grade will also be implemented, promoting a more manageable teaching environment.

Additionally, the agreement sets a counselor caseload guideline at 325 students per counselor, allowing for a more focused and effective educational experience for students needing support. Enhanced co-teaching language has also been added, facilitating inclusive instruction and improved collaborative planning time among educators. Notably, the provision of an additional district librarian aims to bolster support within the school community.

The agreement will now be submitted for ratification by BHEA membership and for formal approval by the BHUSD Board of Education. Contract discussions between the two entities began in January, with several delays arising from leadership transitions within the district. These changes included the resignation of former Superintendent Dr. Michael Bregy in February, followed by the appointment of Dr. Alex Cherniss in April.

The BHUSD Board of Education also underwent a restructuring process, which raised concerns regarding transparency and communication among educators. Many teachers expressed fears that an agreement might not be reached prior to the academic year’s end, leaving them uncertain about their salaries moving forward. However, following the announcement of the agreement on May 20, significant progress in negotiations was noted, leading to improved sentiments among staff and community members.

This agreement is seen as a positive step in ensuring that the needs of educators within the Beverly Hills school district are met, while also addressing the educational environment for students during the upcoming school year.
