Los Angeles is experiencing a culinary renaissance with new food ventures, including the French cruller pop-up Nyletta and various restaurants focusing on fresh concepts. From seasonal offerings to exciting events like chef Rene Redzepi’s residency, the city’s diverse food landscape continues to evolve. Despite some closures, innovative establishments such as Simonette and upcoming projects promise to keep Angelenos engaged with fresh dining experiences throughout the summer.
Los Angeles is currently experiencing a vibrant culinary scene with the emergence of new food ventures and pop-ups, adding to the city’s diverse gastronomic offerings. Among these new developments, the French cruller pop-up Nyletta has opened at Platform in Culver City. This summer-only pop-up is operated by Glenn Robinson and serves customers from Thursday to Sunday. Named after Robinson’s grandmother, Nyletta features a rotating menu of crullers that boast unique glazes, including chile cinnamon, summer cherry, and cinnamon sugar.
Robinson, inspired by his California upbringing and cherished memories of churros, developed his cruller recipe while living in New York. Before launching Nyletta, he catered to East Coast customers through a churro pop-up called Churrero. The launch of Nyletta reflects a growing trend of localized and seasonal food concepts in Los Angeles.
In addition to Nyletta, there are various other exciting culinary ventures in the works in the city. Notably, the popular restaurant Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood is reportedly developing a new project near Barney’s Beanery, which is expected to include an adjacent market. Focusing on seafood, Cento Raw Bar in West Adams recently received a rating of 6.3 from The Infatuation, which praised its seafood tower and design, while also noting that some dishes fell short.
Homegirl Cafe is set to launch a Second Saturdays series starting August 9, where visitors can enjoy breakfast on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. along with vintage shopping and merchandise. Another noteworthy event on the culinary calendar is a residency by renowned chef Rene Redzepi, bringing his three-Michelin-starred restaurant from Copenhagen to Los Angeles for a limited time.
This summer will also see the opening of Maléna by Tamales Elena in mid-July in West Adams, featuring a menu filled with tamales, pozoles, and other traditional Mexican dishes. Meanwhile, those looking for a unique experience can visit Kahani, which will launch a Japanese-inspired afternoon tea offering in July.
Elsewhere in the city, Chicago’s esteemed fine dining establishment will be starting a three-city tour, making a stop with a month-long residency at Maybourne Beverly Hills. However, the culinary landscape is not without its closures. Holy Cow BBQ in Culver City will shut down after ten years of service, although its Santa Monica location remains open. Additionally, Nusr-Et steakhouse, famously founded by Salt Bae, closed its Beverly Hills location after four years of operation.
Several other well-known establishments have also closed their doors, including Verve Coffee Roasters, which shuttered its Downtown LA location after a decade, and Bang Bang Noodles, which ended its pop-up in Culver City after three years. Here’s Looking at You, in Koreatown, has closed after nearly a decade of business, while Elf Cafe in Echo Park ceased operation after 19 years.
On the brighter side, new ventures are cropping up like mushrooms after rain. Simonette, a French restaurant and bar, has recently opened inside the new Palihotel Culver City, offering traditional French cuisine. This fall, Studio Mediterranean will debut at Montage Laguna Beach, featuring upscale Greek seafood dishes. Additionally, new locations of chef Ramón Velázquez’s Corazón Cocina will be opening in Carpinteria and Ventura, expanding his culinary reach across the region.
As the culinary scene continues to evolve, Angelenos can expect a mix of closures and new establishments that showcase the city’s ever-changing food landscape.
