News Summary

Beverly Hills held community events like the successful ‘Beverly Hills Reads!’ and ‘Day of Wellness,’ aimed at improving public engagement and health. Public safety updates included enhanced security measures around schools and a focus on traffic enforcement. Meanwhile, plans for a significant development project were revealed, projected to create jobs and transform the city. Mental health initiatives have also been launched to support residents, highlighting the city’s commitment to wellness.

Beverly Hills Hosts Community Events and Enhances Public Safety Measures

The Beverly Hills Human Relations Commission convened on September 18 to review recent community activities and public safety initiatives. Among the highlights were the successful Beverly Hills Reads! event and the Day of Wellness, both of which fostered community engagement and well-being.

The Day of Wellness took place at Roxbury Park & Community Center and provided residents with a dedicated day for fitness and self-care practices. Community Services Manager Joana Torres reported that the event showcased a diverse range of vendors relating to wellness, a change that Commissioner Pam Kraushaar noted as a significant improvement over past years. The event featured five sessions, with a sound bath led by Inner Bloom Collective emerging as the most popular offering.

In terms of outreach, statistics presented by Torres indicated a robust media campaign promoting the event. Commissioner Noelle Batista highlighted an opportunity to bolster community engagement through enhanced marketing strategies on the city’s social media platforms, suggesting that the Community Life BH account has reached a limited audience.

Additionally, the Beverly Hills Reads! event welcomed author Allegra Goodman on August 24 for a discussion about her book “Isola”, selected for summer reading by Beverly Hills High School English students. This well-attended event attracted 353 participants, with Recreation Services Manager Michael Muse detailing the marketing efforts, which included social media campaigns, e-newsletters, and Eventbrite listings. Some commissioners expressed a desire for lighter reading selections for future events, while Batista proposed that standardized promotional plans be developed for consistent marketing of similar gatherings.

Public Safety and Enforcement Updates

The meeting also addressed pressing public safety concerns outlined by the Beverly Hills Police Department. Enhanced security measures in Beverly Hills Unified School District (BHUSD) schools were highlighted, particularly in response to recent political events, including the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Police Captain Max Subin reported increased surveillance around schools, utilizing “Hawkeye” drones and virtual police officers to monitor any suspicious activities.

To further secure school environments, officers from private security organization Covered 6 have been enlisted to increase their visibility near BHUSD schools. Traffic enforcement has emerged as another key focus for the BHPD, responding to community concerns about loud vehicle exhausts on commercial streets. An Enforcement Day held on August 22 featured 11 BHPD officers who conducted 162 traffic stops, resulting in 120 citations, one motorcycle pursuit, and five vehicle impoundments due to various violations, including texting while driving, speeding, and running red lights.

Additionally, the police department sought input from the commissioners concerning the enforcement of e-bike policies at BHUSD schools and aims to educate students regarding e-bikes and potential parking issues around Durant Drive.

Future Developments in Beverly Hills

An announcement during the meeting detailed that Turner Construction has been selected for the initial phase of the $5 billion One Beverly Hills development project. This ambitious project aims to construct two 28-story skyscrapers, luxury condominiums, a 10-story Aman Hotel, a standalone Aman Club, and extensive botanical gardens. It is expected to create over 2,500 construction jobs and is projected for completion by late 2027.

Mental Health Initiatives

In a related effort to promote community well-being, Dr. Deepak Chopra led a community meditation at Beverly Hills City Hall, part of a Mental Health Wellness series organized by Mayor Lili Bosse. Dr. Chopra addressed the growing crisis in mental health, particularly the rising suicide rates among teenagers. He emphasized the need for community resilience and introduced an innovative chatbot developed by the Deepak Chopra Foundation to provide support for teens in crisis.
