The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has announced scheduled lane closures on Wilshire Boulevard as part of the ongoing D Line subway extension project. The construction is set to take place throughout the fall, with lane restrictions expected at several locations along this key thoroughfare.
Construction is currently focused in the curb lanes on Wilshire Boulevard near Beverly Drive, and while much of the work on the Wilshire/La Brea and Wilshire/Fairfax stations in the Miracle Mile is nearing completion, active work continues at the Wilshire/La Cienega station in Beverly Hills. Motorists can expect two open lanes in each direction on Wilshire Boulevard between San Vicente Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard, but traffic management will be in effect as construction crews carry out necessary tasks.
A K-rail work zone has been established along the south side of Wilshire Boulevard east of La Cienega Boulevard to facilitate street restoration. Additionally, the alley between Lasky and Spalding drives is scheduled to be closed on October 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the removal of geotechnical instruments. Despite these restrictions, access to parking for both residents and businesses will remain in place, with flaggers on-site to assist motorists navigating through the area.
Crews are also engaged in work on the Beverly Drive station and along the curb lanes of Wilshire Boulevard. Although two lanes in each direction are available between Beverly and Crescent drives, there will be restrictions on left turns from westbound Wilshire Boulevard to South Cañon Drive.
At the Century City stations, preparations are underway for deck panel removal and street restoration, which will begin shortly on Constellation Boulevard. Traffic control will be methodically implemented in five phases, starting from the eastern section of the project and moving westward. Following the completion of the deck removal phase, traffic control measures will be adjusted once again on Constellation Boulevard.
Metro officials are advising all motorists to adhere to suggested detours and to allow extra time for travel through the affected areas. Particularly, Wilshire Boulevard is set to be closed between El Camino and Crescent drives until April 7 due to construction at the Wilshire/Rodeo Metro Station.
Project Overview
The D Line Subway Extension Project, which has a total budget of $10 billion, has been actively under construction since 2014. This project aims to connect downtown Los Angeles to West L.A. in just 25 minutes, significantly improving transportation efficiency in the region. Construction crews are removing concrete deck panels as they work on creating the Wilshire/Rodeo Subway station and the Century City Station.
The first segment of this subway extension, which spans from Wilshire Western to Wilshire La Cienega, is anticipated to open later this year. The initial phase includes three stations that are projected to be operational by late 2025. A second phase will create the Wilshire/Rodeo and Century City/Constellation stations, scheduled for completion in 2026, while the final section extending to Westwood/UCLA is expected to open in 2027.
The D Line is among Metro’s most heavily utilized routes, accommodating a daily ridership exceeding 65,000. However, the project has encountered various challenges, including construction delays linked to safety concerns and ongoing financial hurdles regarding essential federal funding. Metro is focused on completing the project ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games to enhance public transport access during the event.
