Enhanced Security Measures for Rosh Hashanah Amidst Rising Antisemitism

Beverly Hills – Enhanced security measures have been instituted across Southern California synagogues in anticipation of Rosh Hashanah, amidst a spike in antisemitism linked to global tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza War. Authorities report a notable rise in antisemitic incidents, with over 9,000 occurrences in the U.S. this year, marking the highest figures since 1978.

As Jewish communities prepare for the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, which symbolizes the start of the new year, local synagogues are adopting themes of hope and renewal. Sinai Temple in Beverly Hills has chosen the theme “rhythm of joy” for this year’s celebration, aiming to inspire a positive outlook among congregants. Rabbi Erze Sherman encourages the community to enter the new year with a refreshing mindset, while Rabbi Nicole Guzik has pointed out the significant societal issues, such as polarization and division, that are prevalent today.

The urgency for increased security measures has been warranted by alarming reports of violence and vandalism within the community. In recent weeks, incidents include a man vandalizing an elementary school in Beverly Hills with a swastika, and multiple similar acts reported in Tarzana. Recognizing the heightened risk, local law enforcement, including the Beverly Hills Police Department and LAPD, have increased patrols around synagogues during this sensitive period.

Private security firms, such as Magen Am, have been employed by synagogues to provide additional protection. The president of Magen Am has articulated a commitment to fostering a safe community while addressing the current climate of fear. The LAPD has also unveiled plans for a “strategic presence” around places of worship, taking into account the uptick in antisemitic sentiment due to recent global conflicts.

The Anti-Defamation League’s report highlights California and New York as the states with the highest levels of antisemitic incidents in the nation, correlating with the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, especially in response to recent missile strikes from Iran against Israel. Consequently, the Beverly Hills Police Department has confirmed that they are actively monitoring global events and adjusting security protocols as necessary.

As the Jewish community engages in the observance of the High Holy Days, which includes Rosh Hashanah and culminates with Yom Kippur, they reflect on themes of repentance and reconciliation. Traditional rituals include partaking of special foods, such as apples dipped in honey, representing the hope for a sweet new year. Free Rosh Hashanah services are also being offered at various locations, including the JEM Center and The Laugh Factory in Hollywood, which has conducted free High Holy Days services annually for 42 years.
