Students on UCLA campus with police presence ensuring safety

News Summary

UCLA has appointed Craig Valenzuela, a former LAPD commander, as its new police chief starting September 1, 2024. This decision follows concerns over campus safety, particularly after significant protests in May 2024. Valenzuela, an alumnus of UCLA, brings nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, including past roles in elite divisions of the LAPD. Chancellor Julio Frenk expressed confidence in Valenzuela’s ability to enhance campus security as the university prepares for upcoming Olympic events. Valenzuela aims to build trust and improve safety protocols amidst the challenges facing the department.

Los Angeles, CA – UCLA has appointed former LAPD commander Craig Valenzuela as its new police chief, a decision that comes amid heightened concerns over campus safety. The announcement was made by UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk, and Valenzuela is set to officially take on the role starting September 1, 2024.

Valenzuela has deep ties to UCLA, being an alumnus who graduated in 1996 with a degree in political science. His background in law enforcement spans nearly three decades, having joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1996. His previous roles include serving as the commanding officer of both the LAPD’s North Hollywood Patrol Division and its Metropolitan Division, known as the department’s elite unit. Valenzuela is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, enhancing his qualifications for the chief position.

The announcement of Valenzuela’s appointment follows a significant leadership change at UCLA’s police department. Former police chief John Thomas stepped down in December 2024 after facing criticism regarding his management during campus protests. These protests, which occurred in May 2024 in response to pro-Palestinian issues, resulted in heightened tensions, injuries, and over 200 arrests, drawing particular scrutiny to the police department’s handling of the situation. An independent review identified failures in communication and decision-making that led to inadequate protection for students during these incidents.

Chancellor Frenk expressed confidence in Valenzuela’s extensive experience and accomplishments in law enforcement as crucial for ensuring the safety of the UCLA community. The university is also working towards increasing safety measures in anticipation of hosting Olympic and Paralympic athletes in 2028, making effective leadership in campus security more pressing than ever.

In addition to Valenzuela’s qualifications, the selection process included a nationwide search overseen by a committee comprised of faculty, administrators, students, and law enforcement executives, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of candidates. Interim Chief Scott Scheffler has been leading the department since the departure of Thomas.

UCLA has faced a turbulent transition period with three police chiefs in under two years, highlighting ongoing issues related to campus and community safety management. The university anticipates Valenzuela’s leadership will stabilize the department and improve security protocols to better serve the student body and university community.

In his new capacity, Valenzuela is expected to focus on fostering a safe and secure campus environment that prioritizes community well-being as part of UCLA’s mission. His background and local affinity to the institution may also play a vital role in building trust between the police department and the diverse UCLA community.
